Mrs. Arcuri handed out the Practice Final Exam, click here, which students should try doing. Treat it like a final exam: have your formula sheet, multiplication chart, and a glass of water/snack and write it in a quiet place. The Practice Final Exam sheet is due Thursday. Mrs. Arcuri will make an answer key so that you can check to see how you are doing and what you still need to study/get help on before the actual final exam on June 2nd and 3rd.
The second half of the class we discussed 3-D shapes (prisms and pyramids) and why manufacturers use different shaped packages. For example, we discussed why golf balls are sold in rectangular prisms (box) and tennis balls are sold in cylinders. Students started making net diagrams for a cube and folded them to make a three dimensional rectangular prism (cube). We will finish this on Wednesday. HW= Practice Final Exam, due Thursday. No Math today, due to students working on their Advisory Portfolio Interview presentation.

Students worked on novice, apprentice, or expert level area of irregular shape worksheet, due Thursday.
We had a presentation on mental health and how to take care of ourselves with respect to stress. Mr. Tenisci gave us some of English block to work on Math. Students finished calculating their Tangram character from last week and painted their character. Thanks Mr. Tenisci for giving us some of third block to do this. See below for review of area and perimeter. Students calculated the area of their Tangram character from earlier this week, see previous posts. Students calculated the area of the common shapes (square, parallelogram, and triangles) and added up the areas to get the area of their character (irregular shape). Those students that finished calculating the area of the irregular shaped character got their work checked by Mrs. Arcuri and then started painting their character.
We further discussed how to calculate the area of irregular shapes from last class and looked at more examples.
Some students wrote the Math Gauss Contest. We reviewed area of common shapes (square, rectangle, parallelogram, triangle, trapezoid, and circle), which then lead to a lesson on how to calculate the area of irregular shapes like the tangram character, which is made from common shapes. We looked at a few examples and we will continue this next class. Students started a formula sheet for area and perimeter of shapes, click here.
