Group 1 (novice) Order of Operations practice
Group 2 (apprentice) Order of Operations practice
Group 3 (expert) Order of Operations practice
HW = complete your Order of Operations practice sheet and bring your golf club (Friday is golf game)
We discussed Order of Operations using both positive and negative numbers. After doing some group practice, students assessed themselves novice, apprentice, or expert. From the assessment students were given practice at their level.

Students wrote a short quiz on multiplying and dividing integers. Please come see Mrs. Arcuri if you did not do well on your quiz and need some help with integers. We read the book "This Plus That" and discussed how, just like numbers, words are written or spoken in a certain order for them to have a certain meaning. We connected this to the importance of completing an equation in a certain order in order for it to have a certain solution (order of operations). We will continue this next class.
Students practice multiplying and dividing more than two integers. Remember: if there are an even number of negative signs then the answer is positive and if there are an odd number then the answer is negative. Students worked well in class and as long as they got enough questions done to allow them practice (example 1-20) then there is no homework.
We discussed how division of integers is similar, yet different, than multiplying integers. HW = complete all four Integer websites on the Math 8 main page. Look to see if you have just 1 golf club and bring that for next week.
We continued the lesson on Multiplying Integers from last day.

Today students were introduced to multiplying integers using tiles, number lines and then as a class we came up with a rule. Click here for multiplying integer teacher notes Click here for Multiplying Integer student notes. I handed back the decimal quiz that students wrote yesteday. Please note that you can come and get help with decimals at lunch or after school on Wednesday. We reviewed adding and subtracting integers (using tiles, number lines, and following rules). HW = finish Walk the Line worksheet (click here), due Wed.
Students recieved their textbooks and wrote a short quiz on adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing decimals to see a snap shot of where they are at. Note: Wednesdays at lunch or after school I hold a Math Club where you can come and get some help.
Today was our Terry Fox run so it was not a typical Math class today. I checked that students had their outline signed and Daffintion Decoder (dividing decimals) worksheet was complee. Please come see me if you are having difficulties with adding, subtracting, multiplying, or dividing decimals.
I reviewed how to divide decimals (click here for the lesson) and students practiced using models and written form.
HW = complete Daffynition Decoder worksheet (click here for worksheet), due Friday. |
