Today we looked at several examples of data tables and graphs and we set the criteria. Students worked with their Exercise Experiment groups to create their data table for their group. Note: next P.E. class you will be starting to collect your data.
Students brainstormed, watched a video, and completed the notes (click here) on the 7 characteristics of Living Things.
Click here to see the music video for the Biology Song. Students read through three articles on exercise and heart rate, which is the topic of their experiment that they are in the middle of working. We discussed the importance of having background information for an experiment so that we can make an educated hypothesis. Students took notes from one, two or all three articles for their background information paragraph(s).
Note: The writing and grammar of your paragraph will count for your English mark. Click here for the blue article Click here for the white article Click here for the white with pink dots article HW = finish your notes for your exercise paragraph if you did not have time in class (click here for the articles) Students looked at examples of procedures for the Exercise Experiment that students started working on last day and as a class we discussed the criteria for a good procedure (ex. step-by-step, detail, short, but not too short, etc..) Students met with their group to discuss the groups experiment and wrote their procedure.
HW = complete the Exercise Experiment write up (make sure to proof read your work), due Monday. Students practiced the scientific method for a very simple experiment with Coke and Diet Coke to see if one was more or less dense that the other. In groups, students started creating their exercise experiment. Students will continue working on these next class.
We defined the three variables (independen/manipulate, dependent, and controll) when doing a fair experiment. Studens worked in partners to look at several experiments and identify the 3 types of variables. Note: you are required to come up with at least 5 controlled varialbes for an experiment.
Students handed in their "Why is Science Important" assingment that was due today and wrote a reflection in thier journal. In groups, students reviewed the scientific method by matching terms to definitions and then completed the notes. Click here for the Scientific Method Notes.
Students finished watching the video clips on "Why is Science Important?" (click here for the vidoe clips) and started their essay. The essay should be a well thought out answer as to why science important to you and society. You may include quotes or paraphrases from the video clips, but make sure to reference the video. I am hoping that you will also include some of your own thoughts, beliefs, values, and ideas in your essay as well. Note: if writing an essay is not your thing then you can represent your assignment in a different way, but make it powerful. Please make sure two people proofread it and hand in a professional looking assignment.
